Tis the season to go ice skating, but where do you go? You don’t have to look very far because all you have to do is go to Choate Rosemary Highschool’s ice rink for some open skating. Town residents can go to the Wallingford Park and Rec department, located at 6 Fairfield Blvd building # 6, and pick up an ice skating tag for $10 that allows you to skate for an hour every Sunday, your own skates are required.
The Parks and Rec department has been doing this since January of 2010 and is going into its third year of this program. Open skate starts in January and there are two time slots that people can choose to skate from, 12:15 to 1:15 or 1:30 to 2:30. When you buy a pass it allows you to only skate one of those two time slots, but for $20 you can skate both time slots. The program goes until the second to last Sunday in February and you can get passes before the program starts or after. The money for the passes goes towards rink time, rink supervisors and the tags themselves. A portion of the price for the tags goes towards the Adaptive Skate Program, which is a program that helps kids with special needs skate.
People who live outside of Wallingford can get tags if they like but only after a majority of the tags have already been sold to Wallingford residents.
So if you’re looking for somewhere to go to get some quality ice skating in, go over to the Parks and Rec department and pick up some Choate ice rink tags then head on over to Remsen Ice Rink at Choate on Sundays for some enjoyable ice skating.
The Rink is located at 333 Christian St., Wallingford.
